Eric

The following is a letter from Deborah, Eric’s mom. We can’t thank MSI Canada enough for supporting The Children’s Wish Foundation. Eric has a wonderful sister which makes us a family of four. You have no idea how excited Eric is to go on a family trip to Disney World. Eric is a 16 year old boy who was diagnosed when he was a baby with a rare form of Refractory Epilepsy. Doctors had trouble controlling his seizures as he would continue to go into prolonged seizures called status events. Eric has ended up in the Alberta Children’s Hospital where he has endured countless trips to the trauma room in emergency, hospital stays and even times in intensive care. Eric has gone through brain surgery, but the surgeon told us his seizures are coming from a place in his brain that controls his walking and talking and they could not remove the seizure site as he would never be able to walk or talk again.

Eric now has a vegus nerve stimulator implant installed in his chest, this disc is hooked up to the vegus nerve in his neck and helps to interrupt seizure activity. This has improved his life greatly, although he still experiences seizures and still requires a cocktail of medications. This has lead Eric to wear braces on both legs, and use a wheelchair for long journeys. The epilepsy has also affected his learning and his speech. To add to his challenges Eric has Asthma and is also anaphylactic to any milk proteins, epi-pens have to be taken where ever he goes.

Through all of this Eric has a sense of humor; he has also started to play Little League Challenger Division baseball this last spring and loves Disney movies. We are sure if Eric never had to battle this, he would have been an actor or a movie director. He is always directing us to say lines at home. This is why Disney World will fill a dream for him and our whole family. The Children’s Wish Foundation is taking care of all the details, setting everything up for us and making it possible. We can go as a family and simply have fun. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts MSI Canada for your generosity. Your support allows The Children’s Wish Foundation to work their magic and to help families create an awesome memory…Love Eric’s Family.
